From there we will either walk or take a wagon ride to our assigned volunteer area where the staff will work alongside us providing all the instructions we need. We will be harvesting crops and may also be asked to assist with packaging the produce in bags and boxes for distribution.
Our arrival time is 8:35 a.m. (parked). You are welcome to bring your lunch and use the picnic tables in the pavilion afterwards. First Fruits Farm graciously offers to sign community service hour forms after the volunteer session, so please bring your paperwork if this is something you would like.

Details: Let’s visit Baltimore County Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)! This is the main location in the county that is equipped to sort ‘single stream’ recyclables- a mixture of paper, plastic, metal and glass items. The highly automated sorting equipment contains 86 conveyor belts, 6 sorting screens, 3 optical sorters and 2 balers!
On our tour we will learn about waste management and see first hand what happens to recyclables from the time they are picked up by collection trucks until they are baled and ready for market.
Be prepared to climb up and down 40 stairs during the tour. Everyone must wear long pants and sneakers or boots. No sandals, Crocs, slippers or Uggs.
The recycling center was strict in their 10+ age policy. If there is interest, our younger students can gather that day and time to play at the nearby Oregon Ridge Nature Center playground. Field trip attendees are invited to reconvene there for lunch afterwards.
Parents with children in both age-groups are welcome to make arrangements for an attending parent to chaperone your older kids at the Recycling Center.
